Do you have roller derby in your city? If so, are costumes involved for the announcers and the spectators? I’ve only been to one roller derby event, and it was here in NOLA on Saturday night, so I’m not sure what’s just roller derby and what’s unique to our town.
Saturday’s Big Easy Rollergirls bout was between the Cajun Rollergirls and the Crescent Wenches, both teams from Louisiana. The Wenches were wearing mild zombie makeup – basically looking pre-bout bruised. Some spectators were in serious full-on zombie mode – quite realistic! I’m not sure what the reason was for the zombie-ness, but it looked cool and creepy.
Four Elvises (Elvi) tossed candy and cups to the spectators at assorted intervals. The roller girls themselves did not disappoint, and scored all kinds of points, bumped and knocked each other, and skated like pros. And our home team, The Crescent Wenches, won! Woody’s Fish Tacos and Dat Dog provided refreshments, and there were two full bars for liquid yumminess too.
During intermission, kids are allowed to run around the track and they do! Happily! Even some of the kids were in costumes – one in a long Rapunzel wig, and one in a wrestling mask and cape.
The whole event was great fun – lots of cheering, clever announcers, kids running and playing, zombies, Elvi, cheerleaders, great food — really, what more could you want? Oh, and the players’ names are hysterical too – all the roller girls have pseudonyms like Diet Choke, Mommy Fear Dis, MILF Duds, and others not quite suitable to print here.
Enjoy the slide show – a little taste of Roller Derby in New Orleans!

Forwarded your post today to a colleague who skates in roller derby!
Crazy fun down there. Looks a lot different than school days.
Hope she enjoys it! You’ll have to tell me how it’s the same and different . . .
Looks like fun. My sister is part of a roller derby team, but I haven’t had the chance to attend one of her bouts yet so I’m not sure what’s normal and what’s not (if anything about roller derby can be termed normal…lol!).
Hope you get to attend one soon – we thought it was pretty cool!
We love the Roller Derby here in Indianapolis and yes it comes with costumes! Every year they do a Star Wars theme Roller Derby. Spectators really go all out for that one.
I’ve never been to one but watched a few movies and documentaries on the subject… Looks like a ton of fun. Hope you are doing well… We are rained in.
